1. Function & Purpose (The "Fuse Link"):

This fuse serves one critical purpose: to act as the ultimate safeguard against short-circuit currents. Battery banks can deliver enormous, virtually unlimited fault currents almost instantaneously. This fuse is designed to sacrifice itself by melting ("blowing") extremely quickly under such a fault, isolating the battery bank to prevent:

Fire from overheating cables and equipment.

Explosion due to thermal runaway in battery cells.

Destruction of expensive components like inverters and charge controllers.

2. Key Specifications Decoded:

BATTERY: This indicates the fuse is engineered for the unique characteristics of battery circuits, which can deliver massive, sustained fault currents unlike typical solar sources.

1000V: This is the maximum DC voltage the fuse can safely interrupt. This high rating is essential for large, high-voltage battery banks used in commercial and utility-scale energy storage systems. The system voltage must not exceed this rating.

100A: This is the current rating of the fuse. It is designed to carry up to 100 amps continuously without operating. It will blow only when the current significantly exceeds this value for a specific time, as defined by its time-current curve.

3. Key Features & Design:

Very High Interrupting Rating (kA): This is its most important feature. A fuse like this will have an interrupting rating of perhaps 20kA, 50kA, or even 100kA. This means it can safely stop (interrupt) a fault current as high as 100,000 amps without exploding.

Fast-Acting: Typically a "fast-blowing" or "semiconductor" fuse type, designed to open in milliseconds to protect sensitive electronics.

Robust Construction: Often features a ceramic body (to withstand heat and contain an arc) and sand filling (to quench the arc quickly).

4. Where It Is Used:

This fuse is installed at the source of power:

Directly on the Battery Terminal: As the main overcurrent protection device (OCPD) for the entire battery bank.

On the Main DC Busbar: Between the battery bank and the primary DC disconnect switch or inverter.

Sizing is Paramount: Fuse sizing for batteries is complex. The 100A rating must be chosen based on:

The maximum continuous discharge current of the battery bank.

The inverter/charger's maximum input current.

NEC requirements for conductor protection.

It must be large enough to avoid nuisance blowing during normal operation but fast enough to protect the cables.

Class T Fuse: For large battery banks, this fuse link is often a Class T type, which is renowned for its extremely fast operation and high interrupting rating.

Use with a Fuse Holder: Must be installed in a fuse holder or base specifically rated for 1000VDC and 100A.

One-Time Use: It is a sacrificial device. After it blows, the fault must be found and corrected before replacing it with an identical new fuse.
