Description

1. Function & Purpose (The "PV Fuse"):

Unlike a circuit breaker that protects against overloads, a PV fuse has a very specific job: to protect against fault currents in reverse directions. This happens primarily in two scenarios:

Short Circuit in a String: If a short occurs in one string, current from other parallel strings can backfeed into the faulted string.

Failed "Blocking Diode": Modern inverters have electronics that prevent reverse current, but if they fail, current can flow backwards.

The fuse acts as a weak link, designed to "blow" (melt) and open the circuit when a reverse current exceeds its rating, preventing overheating and potential fire.

2. Key Specifications Decoded:

PV (Photovoltaic):

This is crucial. PV fuses are specially engineered for the unique demands of solar applications:

High DC Voltage: They are designed to safely extinguish a DC arc at high voltages.

Partial Loading: They can handle the continuous, often partial, loading typical of solar panels.

Environmental Stability: They perform reliably across a wide temperature range.

1000VDC:

This is the maximum DC voltage the fuse is rated to safely interrupt. The system's maximum voltage (Voc adjusted for cold temps) must be below this rating. This high voltage rating is for commercial systems or residential systems using high-voltage string inverters.

20A (Rated Current - 20 Amps):

This is the current rating of the fuse element. It must be carefully sized to the specific circuit it protects. A common rule of thumb is to size the fuse at 1.56 x Isc (the short-circuit current of the string) per the National Electrical Code (NEC), ensuring it can handle normal operating currents but will blow under fault conditions.

3. Where It Is Used:

PV fuses are installed in combiner boxes. Each series string of solar panels connects to a separate fuse holder within the combiner box before being paralleled with other strings. This way, if one string has a fault, only its fuse blows, isolating that single string without affecting the output of the entire array.

4. Key Advantages:

Targeted Protection: Isolates faulted strings to prevent overall system shutdown.

Fire Prevention: Prevents overheating of wires and components caused by reverse currents.

Cost-Effective Safety: Provides critical protection for a relatively low cost.

5. Critical Installation Notes:

Sizing is Paramount: Incorrect fuse sizing is dangerous. An undersized fuse will blow under normal operation (nuisance tripping). An oversized fuse may not blow during a fault, creating a fire hazard.

DC-Rated Only: Never use an AC fuse in a DC PV circuit. AC fuses cannot extinguish a high-voltage DC arc and can explode, causing a fire.

Replace, Don't Reset: Fuses are one-time-use devices. After blowing, the fault must be found and corrected before replacing the fuse with an identical new one.

Use in Pairs: In a combiner box, a fuse is required for the positive lead of each string.
